Wood
Mouse (Apodemus
sylvaticus)
This British Wood Mouse might not only live in woods, it also favours
hedgerows and mature gardens! The wood mouse, also known as the long-tailed
field mouse is mainly nocturnal and is known to venture indoors when
it gets a bit nippy!
Wood mice usually spend the day resting in their burrows. Wood mice
dig systems of burrows in which to store food and to provide a nesting
chamber for their young. A female wood mouse may produce up to four
litters a year although two litters of four to seven babies in more
likely. The babies are fully weaned after three weeks being forced
our by the mother! Several adult wood mice may live together in the
same system of tunnels which will have two open entrances.
The wood mouse is mainly vegetarian, eating nuts, fruits, seeds, seedlings,
and buds. When these are scarce, wood mice will also eat snails, earthworms
and insects. They will fill their underground
chambers with supplies of nuts and seeds to help them survive the
winter.
