Our native Red
Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is sadly under threat
from the introduced American Grey Squirrel (who feeds more efficiently
in woodland and has adapted so well it’s had a negative impact
on the Red Squirrel population). The break up of some of the Red Squirrel’s
woodland habitats, and disease, has also taken its toll.
Red Squirrels live for about 6 years, eating seeds (especially Scots
pine cones) sometimes fungi, green shoots and fruits of shrubs/trees.
They do not hibernate but live in dreys (large nests) in the forks
of trees. Whilst solitary by nature related squirrels will share a
drey to keep warm in winter.
The Red Squirrels young (called kittens) are born in spring. Whilst
6 kittens are not unusual, 2-3 is more likely.
Good design and management of conifer forests will help this beautiful
creature to survive and we owe a great deal to those who are working
to conserve their habitat; for example, the wonderful work of ‘The
Red Squirrels In South Scotland Project’ who’s aim
is to maintain southern Scotland as a stronghold of our native red
squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris L.)
