Manatee (Trichechus
senegalensis)
This serene and peaceful mammal is also known as a Sea Cow and sailors
were understood to have mistaken them for mermaids.
The West African manatee (Trichechus senegalensis) weighs
up to 500 kg (1100 lb) and reaches more than 12 feet in length. These
large animals were once thought to be related to the walrus, because
of the way they look, but now it’s understood that manatees
are more closely related to elephants than any other living animal.
