JADDCARDS - Natural History Greeting Cards
'Little Owl' - British Wildlife

The Little Owl (Athene noctua) can be seen during the day perched on fences, a branches, telegraph poles or even rocks. It was the sub-species Athene noctua vidalii, (W Europe from Iberia to Belgium) that was introduced into England and New Zealand in the 19th century.

With a length of 21-23 cm (8-9"), a wing Span of 54-58 cm (21½-23") and weighing only 140-220 g (5-7¾ oz), the Little Owl is the smallest owl that you will find in Britain.

Little Owls choose to live where there are plenty of trees, (orchards, farmland with hedges, copses,) as they will provide plenty of nest holes. They will also nest in the walls of old buildings, rabbit burrows and cliff holes. The female lays 3-5 eggs in early May.

The Little Owl hunts at night and at dawn, feeding on a wide variety of prey - mostly small mammals, such as mice, voles, shrews, even small rabbits, as well as insects, earthworms, snails, slugs and small fish.

This Little Owl greeting card image can also be found on our key rings and fridge magnets.

Learn more about the Little Owl and all other owls by looking on the World Owl Trust website. The World Owl Trust exists to advance wildlife conservation by primarily focusing on all owl species and their ecology. Through the promotion of habitat management and restoration, research, captive breeding programmes, and its own education policy, the Trust intends to bring an awareness of conservation and environmental sustainability to all levels of society.

On-site facilities will be maintained to provide treatment and rehabilitation for sick and injured owls and other wildlife.
