JADDCARDS - Natural History Greeting Cards
'Kingfisher
' - British Wildlife

The Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) will patiently sit on a branch, watching the water looking for a suitable fish before diving in, beak first, having predicted where the fish will be. Sticklebacks are a favourite and they also eat aquatic insects

Kingfishers live around streams, ponds, lakes and slow-flowing rivers. Instead of nests kingfishers make burrows in sandy riverbanks. The tunnel can be a metre long with a chamber at the end where 6-10 eggs are laid.

Unlike a lot of birds it is difficult to tell male and female kingfishers apart. The only difference is evidence of orange colouration on the lower bill if it’s a female (like this one!)
