JADDCARDS - Natural History Greeting Cards
'Hedgehog
' - British Wildlife

Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is Britain’s only spiny mammal with up to 5000 spines! The spines are actually modified hairs that replace themselves every 12 months. Muscles cause them to stand on end when the hedgehog is under threat to help protect their vulnerable underside which is covered in soft fur.

Hedgehogs are commonly found in gardens hunting beetles, earthworms, slugs and snails although forests, hedgerows, scrub and cultivated land is also chosen habitat.

Hedgehogs are particularly active at night, after heavy rain, rooting through the undergrowth for food.

During the day shelter comes in the form a nest of leaves, moss and grass. Between November and mid March Hedgehogs will hibernate in their nests, often in hedgerows.

Females will have one or two litters (of about five Hoglets) a year.
