‘Bumblebee’ – Native British Wildlife

Bumblebee (Bombus hortorum)
This bumblebee picture shows one of the larger, hairier species of bee. The Bombus hortorum bumblebee has the longest tongue of any bumblebee in the UK, (it is usually around 1.5 cm long!) consequently it loves deep flowers such as honeysuckle, foxglove and aquilegia. It's abundant everywhere, bound to have visited your garden. They nest on or just under the ground (often in old mouse holes). This example is a queen Bombus hortorum bumblebee, only mated queen bees survive the winter to start new colonies in the spring.

This Bumblebee image can also be found on our key rings and fridge magnets

To learn more about Bumblebees and how to attract them to your garden read English Nature’s pdf leaflet produced by their Bumblebee Working Group.
